The G7 is a group of countries that was created to address economic problems, but has since expanded to include issues related to the environment, food security, and human rights.
Recently, the G7 met in Hiroshima and focused on Russia's aggression towards Ukraine. The G7 agreed to support Ukraine for as long as it takes, and the U.S. announced a $375 million military aid package for Ukraine. The meeting also addressed nuclear disarmament, and leaders from India, Brazil, and Ukraine attended. China was not directly mentioned, but statements were made about supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific and opposing any forceful changes to the status quo.
The G7 meeting was successful in promoting international order based on the rule of law and nuclear disarmament, but real-world conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, will continue to challenge the organization.
A: | Did you hear about the G7 meeting? |
B: | Yeah, I heard they focused on the war in Ukraine. |
A: | That's right. They also agreed to support Ukraine with a military aid package. |
B: | Another one? The war will never end! Who attended the meeting? |
A: | Leaders from the G7 countries, plus India, Brazil, and Zelensky made a surprise visit. |
B: | Interesting. Do you think the G7 can really make a difference in these conflicts? |
A: | It's hard to say. I kind of feel like they're partly responsible for them. |
