An art student in South Korea ate a banana that was taped to a museum wall. The banana was art by an Italian artist named Maurizio Cattelan. The artwork is called "Comedian" and it sold for $120,000 at an art fair in Miami in 2019.
The student told the museum that he ate the banana because he was hungry. After eating the banana, the student put the peel back on the wall. The museum replaced the peel with a fresh banana. The artist, Cattelan, did not comment about the incident.
The artwork is part of Cattelan's solo exhibition at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul. The banana is not for sale and is replaced every two to three days. This is not the first time someone has taken the banana from the wall. In 2019, a performance artist ate the banana at an art fair in Miami. The artwork is also involved in a copyright battle.
| Guard: | Excuse me, you just ate the artwork of Maurizio Cattelan! |
| Student: | What? I had no idea! I'm so sorry! |
| Guard: | That banana on the wall was worth $120,000! |
| Student: | Are you serious?! I just ate it because I was really hungry. |
| Guard: | Please be more careful in the museum and respect the art. |
| Student: | I will. I'm sorry... wow, it tasted like a regular banana. |
