Article

John Price, a wealthy farmer in England, was sentenced to one year in jail for damaging a site of special scientific interest. He illegally removed trees, destroying homes for otters, kingfishers, and trout. Price used large machines like diggers and bulldozers to move soil from the river, causing a lot of costly damage.

The court found out that Price is worth about £25 million. He must pay £600,000 for the prosecution costs and an additional £655,000 to fix the damage at Kingsland river. Price said he wanted to stop flooding in local areas. The judge wanted this punishment to discourage others from doing the same thing.

People who care about the environment were happy with the decision. Feargal Sharkey, a waterways supporter, thanked the Environment Agency for their work. The River Lugg is home to many plants and animals, with 121 plant species living there. The actions taken by Price destroyed the homes of many animals like otters, kingfishers, and salmon, as well as trees and other river life. Experts believe it will take many years for the trees to grow back and make the river diverse again.
