Ms. Sasaki welcomes the new ALT and introduces him to the school principal. Later, Nami and her new friends get a big surprise at English Club.

Ms. Sasaki:	Oh! Hello! Please come in.
Nick:	Ko nichi ha!
Ms. Sasaki:	Wow! Your Japanese is amazing!
Nick:	Haha, thank you, but no, I can't speak Japanese!
Ms. Sasaki:	No problem. Let's speak in English.
Ms. Sasaki:	I'm Ms. Sasaki. It's nice to meet you, Mr. Ramsay.
Nick:	Nice to meet you, too. Please call me Nick.
Ms. Sasaki:	Okay, Nick. How are you finding Japan so far?
Nick:	Well, actually, I only got here yesterday.
Ms. Sasaki:	Oh, you must be tired! It's a long way from England.
Nick:	Yes. It's a long way to swim!
Ms. Sasaki:	???
Nick:	Haha, I'm just joking. I came here by skateboard.
Ms. Sasaki:	...

Ms. Sasaki:	I see.
Nick:	What do you do, Ms. Sasaki?
Ms. Sasaki:	I'm the head English teacher.
Nick:	Oh! So, I'll be working with you?
Ms. Sasaki:	Yes. You're my ALT.

Ms. Sasaki:	Assistant Language Teacher.
Nick:	Ohhh... I thought it meant "Amazing Lemon Tea".
Ms. Sasaki:	???

Nick:	You have a nice school!
Ms. Sasaki:	Yes! Let me show you around.
Ms. Sasaki gives Mr. Ramsay a tour of the school.

Scene 2

It's lunchtime at Pinecone High.
Mako:	What's in your lunchbox, Nami?
Nami:	Oh, nothing special, just a rice ball and some fish.
Mako:	My mom always gives me grapes. Like, so many grapes!
Mako:	I think she wants me to share them. Do you want one?
Nami:	Er... sure. Thanks.
Mako:	So, English Club is really fun...
Mako:	Ms. Sasaki gives us a place, like "a restaurant" and we have to role play a conversation using English.
Mako:	The problem is, we aren't very good at English...
Mako:	So we usually just say "Menu, please! Chicken, please!" and laugh a lot.
Mako:	Can you speak English, Nami?
Nami:	Me? Er... I... I've never tried.
Mako:	Well, you can't be worse than... Nobu!
Nobu and his friend join the girls.
Nobuaki:	Ooooh! Grapes!
Nobu takes a handful of grapes from Mako's lunchbox.
Mako:	Oi!
Mako looks at him angrily.
Nobuaki:	Hey Nami. That rice ball looks good.
Nobuaki:	Are you going to eat it?
Mako:	Where's your lunch, Nobu?
Nobuaki:	Oh, I finished it already... before school.
Masayuki:	*cough cough*
Nobuaki:	Oh yeah! Masa, this is Nami, the new girl.
Nami looks at the boy.
Nobuaki:	Nami, this is Masa, the computer nerd.
Masayuki:	Hi. I'm Masayuki. How are you doing?
Nami:	Hi. I'm Nami.
Mako:	Nami's coming to English Club today.
Masayuki:	Oh cool. We need more people.
Masayuki:	Right now it's only us.
Nami:	Only you?
Mako:	Yeah... but if you join, that makes four!
Nami:	Oh, I thought...
Nobuaki:	Look. If you're not going to eat that rice ball...
Mako:	Nobu! No!
Masayuki:	Nobu! Stop!
Nobu suddenly takes Nami's rice ball.
He slowly puts it in his mouth and starts to eat it.
Mako, Masa and Nami watch. They can't believe it.
Nobu closes his eyes and smiles as he finishes the rice ball.
Nobuaki:	Mmm-mmm!
Nobuaki:	De-li-cious!
Mako:	You are unbelievable!
Nobuaki:	Thank you!
Mako:	Oh my god! You're such a goof!
Everybody looks at Nami's empty lunchbox.
Masayuki:	So... meet us outside after school, okay?
Mako:	All right. Come on, Nami.
Mako:	Let's finish these grapes somewhere else.
Mako:	Bye goofballs!
Nobuaki:	Yeah, bye... Hey Masa, what's in your lunchbox?

Scene 3

Ms. Sasaki introduces Mr. Ramsay to the school principal.
Mr. Ishioka:	Ah, Ms. Sasaki. You found our new teacher!
Ms. Sasaki:	Good afternoon, Mr. Ishioka. Yes! This is Mr. Ramsay.
Nick:	Ko nichi ha! Nick arimasu!
Nick shakes the principle's hand.
Mr. Ishioka:	Mr. Nick. It's nice to meet you.
Mr. Ishioka doesn't let go of Nick's hand.
Nick:	Oh good! You can speak English, too!
Mr. Ishioka:	Haha, just a little.
They continue shaking hands.
Nick looks at his hand.
Mr. Ishioka is still shaking it.
Mr. Ishioka:	Did Ms. Sasaki show you around the school?
Nick:	Yes, thank you. She has been very helpful.
Mr. Ishioka continues to shake Nick's hand.
Mr. Ishioka:	Please sit down. We have some milk tea for you!
Nick:	Oh, thank you!
Nick looks at his hand.
Mr. Ishioka is still shaking it.
Nick:	...
Ms. Sasaki:	...
Mr. Ishioka:	...
Finally, Nick pulls his hand free and sits down.
Mr. Ishioka:	Now, Ms. Sasaki. Tell me. How is the new girl?
Ms. Sasaki:	Ah, Naomi Watanabe? Yes, she started today.
Ms. Sasaki:	She's a very quiet girl. Very shy.
Mr. Ishioka:	I see.

Nick:	Japanese people love to slurp noodles!
Nick:	Isn't that right, Mr. Ishioka?

Ms. Sasaki:	Nick. It's time we got going. We have English Club today.

He tries to shake Nick's hand again, but...

Nobu and Masa are first to the meeting place.
Nobuaki:	...then I did a slam dunk and the ball hit him on the head!
Masayuki:	Hahaha, was he okay?
Nobuaki:	No, not really. LOL!
Masayuki:	That's crazy. He's your PE teacher!
Nobuaki:	Haha, yeah... oh, look who's coming.
Masayuki:	Hey Mako.
Mako:	Hi Masa. Nobu.
Nobuaki:	Where's Nami?
Mako:	She's not here?
Nobuaki:	Not yet.
Mako:	Huh. I thought she'd be here by now.
Masayuki:	Wasn't she with you?
Mako:	She was, but she had to get something from her locker.
Nobuaki:	I hope it's another rice ball!
Mako:	*sigh*
Masayuki:	Are you sure she knows where to meet us?
Mako:	Yeah... I mean, I think so.
Nobuaki:	Ah! There she is.
Nobu jumps up and down waving his arms.
Nobuaki:	Oi!! Nami! Over here!
Nami hurries to meet them.
Masayuki:	Good. Everyone's here.
Masayuki:	Let's go before Ms. Sasaki gets mad.
The friends run off to English Club.

Ms. Sasaki:	And this is the clubroom.
Nick:	I like it!
*knock knock*
Mako:	May we come in?
Ms. Sasaki:	Aha, and here are our members!
Ms. Sasaki:	Come in everyone!
Mako:	Hello!!
Masayuki:	Good afternoon!
Nobuaki:	Hey, yo! What's up?
Nami:	...
Nick:	Hi guys!
Mako:	!!!
Masayuki:	!!!
Nobuaki:	!!!
Nami:	???
Nick:	It's so good to see you all. Ms. Sasaki has told me all about you and what you do in this club.
Nick:	My Japanese is really bad so it's nice to have people to talk to in English.
Nick looks at Mako.
Nick:	Oh Wow! Your hair is really pink!
Mako:	!!!
Masayuki:	!!!
Nobuaki:	!!!
Nami:	*laughs*
Mako looks at Nami, surprised.
Ms. Sasaki:	Everybody, this is Mr. Ramsay.
Ms. Sasaki:	He's our new English ALT at Pinecone High.
Ms. Sasaki:	How about we start with some introductions?
Nick:	Oh yes, that's a great idea! Can I start? Okay, so my name is Nick and I'm from England.
Nick:	I just arrived in Japan yesterday. It's great!
Nick:	My hobby is doing yoga. Do you like yoga? I love yoga!
Masayuki:	???
Nobuaki:	Yogurt?
Nick:	There are four people in my family, my mum, my dad, my brother...
Nick:	He's a funny guy. He's really friendly, but he doesn't have any hair. Just like Mr. Ishioka!
Nami:	*laughs*
Mako:	???
Mako, Nobu and Masa all look at Nami, surprised.
Nick looks at Nobu.
Nick:	Oh wow! What's your name? You're almost as tall as me!
Nick:	How old are you? You look about 30!
Nami:	*laughs*
Ms. Sasaki looks at Nami, surprised.
Mako:	Uhhh...I don't understand. Please speak more slowly.
Nick:	Oh! Sorry! I thought you could speak English.
Ms. Sasaki:	They are learning, Nick. Please use simple English.
Nick:	Okay! No problem!
Nick:	Let's start with you. What's your name?
Mako:	Hi! I'm Mako. I'm 15 years old. I'm in grade 1.
Mako:	I like dancing, and my favorite food is ice cream.
Nick:	Very good! I like ice cream, too! Especially pizza ice cream!
Nami:	*laughs*
Mako:	!!!
Nick:	And you? Tell me about yourself.
Masayuki:	Hi. I'm Masayuki. I'm 15, too. I like computers and robot soccer!
Nick:	Oh cool! We should play robot soccer together!
Nick looks at Nobu.
Nick:	How about you, big boy?
Nami:	*laughs*
Ms. Sasaki:	!!!
Nobuaki:	Me? Nobu desu! Wow! Yo! Let's go! Come on!
Nick:	Yeah! Great English! I love it!
Nick:	What about you?
Nick:	What's your name?
Everyone looks at Nami.
Nami:	Hello. I'm Nami. I just moved here recently from Tokyo because of my dad's job. I didn't want to come here but I had no choice.
Nami:	Now that I'm here, though, I've already made new friends and I think I'm going to like it here. Nice to meet you.
Nick:	!!!
Ms. Sasaki:	!!!
Mako:	!!!
Nobuaki:	!!!
Masayuki:	!!!

Scene 6

Everyone was surprised that Nami could speak English.
She wasn't just good at English. She was fluent!
But how? She said she had never spoken English before.
Mako:	Can you speak English, Nami?
Nami:	Me? Er... I... I've never tried.
It was a mystery!
