New YouTube Channel!

Hi everyone, instead of the usual newsletter, this week I’d like to introduce my new YouTube channel and explain why I started it.

A bit of history

Although I started my YouTube channel five years ago, I didn’t get serious until the summer of 2021. I made some videos that simulated speaking tests from the Japanese “Eiken”, a popular, nationwide exam. I made about 20 of those, which didn’t attract (get) much attention (notice) at first so I started making video lessons based on my news worksheets.

I made 160 news videos and 15 more speaking tests, with mixed success. Eventually, the test videos blew up (became popular) and I gained (got) thousands of subscribers!

Unfortunately, those subscribers only watched the speaking test videos, and only three times a year during the national exams. As soon as the tests were over, my channel went back to sleep.

So, I doubled-down (made extra effort) on the news videos, trying to appeal to English learners from around the world.

The problem was, I think YouTube pigeonholed (categorised) my channel as an “Eiken” channel for Japanese viewers. And since only 1% of those viewers clicked my news videos, YouTube didn’t show them to the global audience I was hoping for.

Starting again!

After a lot of thinking, I finally decided to start a new channel.

First, I’ve organised and rebranded my old channel to appeal to test-takers. It’s what my subscribers want, and it’s what YouTube seems to expect. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/@NicksEnglish

For everyone else, I’ve started a new channel. Instead of news lessons, I want to focus on more specific training for speaking English. You can find the channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@NicksEnglishSpeakingPractice

The future

I hope I can grow this new channel into something special. I plan to upload one or two long-form videos every week, as well as five short videos. It would be great to build a community of people that love to practice speaking English, and I hope you are one of them! 😀

If you’re enjoying my blog and would like to get new posts in your email, please subscribe. If you have friends who might like these posts, please share this link with them. I really appreciate it!

All the best,

Nick
