In Bend, Oregon, people have been sticking googly eyes on city statues and murals, causing a lot of attention online. The city council asked residents to stop doing this because it costs money to remove the eyes without damaging the art.
Some people on social media liked the googly eyes. One person said, "My daughter and I went past the flaming chicken today and shared the biggest laugh." Another said the eyes on a deer statue looked good.
However, the city is removing them because the adhesive can harm the art. Bend's communications director, Rene Mitchell, said, "We encourage our community to engage with the art and have fun. We just need to make sure that we can protect it."
The city has spent $1,500 to remove the eyes from several sculptures.
| A: | Did you see the googly eyes on the deer statue? |
| B: | Yes, they were funny, but I heard the city wants them removed. |
| A: | Really? Why can't they just leave them? |
| B: | They say the glue can damage the art. |
| A: | That's a shame. I liked the flaming chicken one best. |
| B: | The flaming chicken? Oh! You mean the Phoenix Rising sculpture! |
