In Japan, a company named Oji Holdings will stop making baby diapers and will make adult diapers instead. This is because fewer babies are being born in Japan and there are more old people. The company has been making fewer baby diapers since 2001.
In 2023, the number of babies born in Japan was 758,631. This is 5.1% less than the year before and the lowest number since the 19th Century. In the 1970s, more than two million babies were born each year.
"Japan is standing on the verge of whether we can continue to function as a society," said Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last year. He also said it was a case of "now or never".
The Japanese government is trying to help people have more babies, but it is not working. Experts say the reasons are complicated. For example, fewer people are getting married, more women are working, and it is expensive to raise children.
Other countries like Singapore, South Korea, and China also have fewer babies being born.
| A: | So I went to get little Nobu some nappies, but the shop didn't have any. |
| B: | Oh no, seriously? We don't have many left. |
| A: | I know, so I went to another shop and... same thing. No nappies! |
| B: | I guess I could try to order some online, but that'll take a couple of days. |
| A: | Don't worry, I did find some nappies eventually. |
| B: | You did? Oh that's... wait. Those are huge! They're for adults! |
