English Tea Time #23 – A Healthy Change

Nick's English Tea Time

Hello there! In this week’s newsletter, I’d like to talk about healthy eating.

Part-time Job Search

Firstly, a quick update on my efforts to find a part-time job to immerse me in the Japanese language. I made a CV (a resume), got passport pictures taken, and signed up at my local “Hello Work” job centre. Unfortunately, the only work they could offer me was cleaning apartments when people move out. I don’t think my Japanese skills would improve very much doing that kind of work. ๐Ÿ™

My Personal ChefGPT

I’ve been worried about my health lately because I only ever eat cheese on toast or instant noodles for lunch. I decided it was time to start eating healthily. Of course, I can’t afford a personal chef, so I asked ChatGPT for help.

I put too many basil leaves on my Caprese Salad ๐Ÿ˜€

Five Healthy Meals

ChatGPT gave me a list of ingredients and cooking instructions for:

  • Chicken and Avocado Salad
  • Tuna and Vegetable Wrap
  • Quick Stir-Fry Tofu and Vegetables
  • Soba Noodle Salad
  • Caprese Salad with a Japanese Twist

It took me ages to find everything I needed in the Japanese supermarket, and in the end, I bought too much! What ChatGPT didn’t tell me was I needed to pay attention to expiry or “best before” dates. I had to eat all the vegetables before they went bad. ๐Ÿ˜…

Anyway, I’m learning how to cook, and eating healthier foods. I wonder, are you good cook? What do you usually have for lunch?

British English

Here are some useful English phrases you can use to talk about healthy eating:

  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
  • You are what you eat.
  • Make sure to get your five a day. (= five portions of fruit and vegetables.)
  • Opt for whole grains over refined grains.
  • Cut down on sugary drinks and snacks.
  • Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
  • A balanced diet is the key to a healthy life.
  • Moderation is the key to healthy eating.
  • Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your meals.
  • Choose lean proteins for a healthier diet.
  • Avoid processed foods as much as possible.
  • Cooking from scratch is healthier and more satisfying.
  • Portion control helps maintain a healthy weight.

Behind the Scenes

I’m looking forward to watching the Euro 2024 football final between England and Spain. It starts at 4am for me so I hope I can wake up in time!

Learning Chinese!

I’m still using the “Hello Chinese” app for a few minutes every day, but my mind is a sieve (a kitchen strainer)! New words go in one ear and out the other! I think it’s really difficult to learn a new language if you’re not seeing and hearing it every day, wouldn’t you agree?
