Takayama City in the Japan Alps

Let's Takayama is in Takayama City, home to approximately 90,000 people and set in the beautiful mountains of Gifu prefecture and the Japan Alps. It is approximately 2, 4 and 5 hours by train from Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo respectively. The city is often thought of as a little Kyoto because of its traditional streets, shrines, temples and history. Every year, tourists from home and abroad flock to the city, and is one reason for its residents' desire to learn English.

Let's Takayama provides English conversation lessons to students of all ages. While many of the students come to our school to learn the language, they are equally keen to enjoy their classes and learn about the teacher and his or her country. Therefore, it is essential to have an outgoing, friendly personality, and the skills to keep students entertained and involved in enjoyable activities.

Each English class has a maximum of 7 students, all of similar age or ability. Class length varies between 45 and 75 minutes depending on the level. In addition to these in-house classes, the teacher will be required to teach at local kindergartens. A typical workday might therefore include a kindergarten visit from 10:00-12:00, followed by four in-house classes between 3pm and 9:00pm. The teacher will have weekends off plus approximately eight weeks holiday per year.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare for lessons, using the school curriculum. All materials are provided.
  • Be at the school in time to be ready, preferably no later than 15 minutes before the first class.
  • Accept potential students into the classroom to observe lessons.
  • Write student reports once a year.
  • Keep classrooms and the teacher room tidy.
  • Be presentable. A business-casual dress code is preferred.
  • Be approachable. Encourage students to talk with you before, during and after class.
  • Help with monitoring children in the waiting room before and after class.
  • Be respectful and professional with students at all times.
  • Build and maintain a positive working relationship between staff members.
  • Assist with any school events, such as Halloween and Christmas.
  • Keep vehicles and apartments presentable and clean.

  • Must be currently living in Japan.
  • Must have native-level English, preferably with the experience of living in an English-speaking country.
  • Must have a completed three or four-year Bachelor's degree.
  • Certification in TESOL or equivalent is recommended, but not necessary.
  • Experience in teaching, working with children, or in the hospitality industry is a plus.
  • Should be well-spoken and easy to understand.
  • Japanese language ability is not required.

Additional Info:

Let's Takayama is a small, privately-owned school with only two full-time staff - one teacher (that's you!) and one very busy school manager. There are a couple of local teachers who help out on a part-time basis, but you'll have the apartment and car to yourself. Away from the big cities, you'll be immersed in Japanese language, history and culture. It really is a fantastic opportunity to experience the "real" Japan :)

Takayama in English literally means "High Mountain", and as such, you'll experience winters with snow and temperatures down to -5C, and summers that while still reaching highs of 32C, are notably less humid than the majority of Japan. And being surrounded by mountains, you'll find hot springs, ski resorts and hiking trails. It's perfect for anybody who likes the outdoors.

Finally, you can expect a warm welcome and plenty of support from myself and Ms. Kuratsubo, to ensure you have an enjoyable and memorable stay in Takayama.

Thank you for your interest!
