A 52-year-old man from Nagoya, Japan, was arrested for uploading videos of himself playing a video game on YouTube. Shinobu Yoshida is accused of uploading three videos from the game Steins;Gate: My Darling's Embrace, which were then monetized and earned him money from advertising. One of the videos even revealed the game's ending.
The game is a visual novel, which means it is designed to be watched rather than played. The company that owns the rights to the game, Kadokawa, felt that this was a serious enough issue to press charges. Yoshida has admitted that he knew what he was doing was illegal.
This is the first time someone has been arrested in Japan for uploading gameplay videos to YouTube. Although many people upload videos of themselves playing games, they are usually not monetized and so are not illegal. However, a Japanese organization has said that permission should be obtained from the rights holder before uploading any gameplay videos.
A: | Hey, did you hear about that guy who got arrested for uploading Steins;Gate to YouTube? |
B: | Yeah, I did. I can't believe he didn't know it was illegal. |
A: | I know, right? It's not like it's a secret or anything. |
B: | I wonder how much money he made from the videos. |
A: | Probably not enough to make it worth getting arrested over. |
B: | Yeah, definitely not worth it. I'll stick to playing games for fun. |
