Hello there! In today’s newsletter, I’d like to talk about changing jobs.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Work Situation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I have my own little English school in Japan. Actually, it’s just one big classroom in my house. I started the school in 2010 and mostly teach groups of children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last few years, I’ve begun to worry about my job security. There’s a lot of new competition from Japanese cram schools, English learning apps and online lessons. On top of that, Japan is facing a population crisis <\/em><\/strong>(emergency). There are fewer and fewer children being born… which means fewer children learning English! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, I still have regular group lessons every evening. During the daytime, I teach a few private lessons to adults. Some of them are in-person<\/em><\/strong> (face-to face), but some of them are through an online language school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going Solo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now that I have more social media followers, I should be able to quit the online language school and find students to teach by myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some English teachers, yoga instructors, music teachers, and many more, use online scheduling services for their students to book<\/em><\/strong> (reserve) lessons and pay with a credit card. I think I can do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the moment, I’m just planning things, but stay tuned<\/em><\/strong> (keep following) for future announcements. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some common phrases used to talk about changing jobs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Handing in your notice<\/strong><\/strong> – Telling your boss that you’re going to leave the job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Serving your notice period<\/strong><\/strong> – The time between handing in your notice and leaving your job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Landed a new job<\/strong><\/strong> – When you’ve found a new job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. On the lookout for a new job<\/strong><\/strong> – Keeping your eyes open, looking for a new job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Putting feelers out<\/strong><\/strong> – Looking for any new job opportunities, asking around about jobs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Out of work<\/strong><\/strong> – Unemployed, can’t find a job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. To be made redundant<\/strong><\/strong> – Lose your job, not because of any fault of your own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Going freelance<\/strong><\/strong> – Work for yourself. Be your own boss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Switching careers<\/strong><\/strong> – Changing to a different type of work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
